What is the TLV493D Croquette?

The TLV493D Croquette is a breakout board for the TLV493D-A1B6 3D magnetic sensor. It measures magnetic field strength along the x, y, and z axes through a 2-wire I2C interface, with 12-bit resolution per axis and a linear range up to ±130 mT. The sensor also includes an integrated temperature sensor and draws very little current, as low as 0.007 µA in power-down mode. It connects to any Arduino-compatible microcontroller with 3.3V logic (the 5V Arduino UNO needs a level shifter), and works with the Arduino IDE via the manufacturer’s Arduino library and example sketches, or with Processing to visualize sensor data over serial.

Joystick controls

Build a joystick or motion-control input by reading x/y/z magnetic field data from the sensor over I2C, for accurate three-dimensional linear and rotational movement detection.

Contactless knobs and controls

Design a rotary control element for appliances (white goods) or a multifunction knob: the sensor detects rotational movement from magnetic field changes for contactless, reliable position sensing.

Anti-tamper detection

Protect an electric meter against tampering with an external magnet: the sensor continuously monitors the magnetic field to detect abnormal changes consistent with tampering attempts.

Start in 10 minutes

  1. Wire the board’s I2C interface to a 3.3V-logic microcontroller (use a level shifter if your board is 5V, like the Arduino UNO).
  2. Install the TLV493D-A1B6-3DMagnetic-Sensor Arduino Library in the Arduino IDE.
  3. Open one of the library’s example sketches and upload it to your microcontroller.
  4. Read the sensor data (magnetic field x/y/z and temperature) from the Serial Monitor, or visualize it with Processing.
