What is the RS485 Modbus FeatherWing?

The RS485 Modbus FeatherWing is a FeatherWing add-on board built around the SP3485 RS-485 transceiver IC, which converts a UART serial stream to RS-485. The SP3485 is a half-duplex transceiver, reaching transmission speeds up to 10 Mbps, and the board exposes RS-485 on an RJ-45 connector, a 3.5mm screw terminal, and a 0.1″ pitch header. It runs from a single +3.3V supply, is interoperable with +5.0V logic, and supports up to 32 transceivers on the same bus. It works with virtually all Adafruit Feather boards, except boards whose USB-Serial converter uses the UART pins (currently the ESP8266 Huzzah Feather and the nRF52832 Feather).

Read industrial Modbus RTU sensors and meters from a Feather

Situation: your Feather-based project needs data from industrial Modbus RTU field devices, such as temperature sensors or energy/power meters, that only expose an RS-485 serial interface. What you do: stack the RS485 Modbus FeatherWing on the Feather and poll the devices as Modbus RTU slaves through the board’s UART-to-RS-485 conversion, connected via RJ-45, screw terminal, or header. Result: the Feather gets a hardware bridge to read and log values from RS-485 industrial sensors and meters it otherwise has no way to talk to.

Wire a long-distance serial link between two Feathers

Situation: you need a wired serial link between two Feathers placed farther apart than a direct UART or I2C connection can reach. What you do: put an RS485 Modbus FeatherWing on each Feather and wire them together over a twisted-pair RS-485 cable (RJ-45, screw terminal, or header), communicating over the half-duplex link. Result: a point-to-point wired connection that can run up to the RS-485 standard’s maximum permissible length of about 1200 meters (4000 ft) between driver and receiver, well beyond what UART or I2C support directly.

Add a listening node to an existing RS-485/Modbus network

Situation: an existing RS-485/Modbus network already has a master and field devices, such as sensors, meters, VFDs, and controllers, and you want to add a node that logs or monitors that traffic. What you do: stack the RS485 Modbus FeatherWing on a Feather and wire it onto the same RS-485 bus, which allows up to 32 devices without a repeater, so it receives the same UART-converted traffic as the other nodes. Result: the Feather becomes an extra node on an existing RS-485/Modbus installation, able to log the bus traffic without disrupting the existing master/slave devices.
